biograpy Mikhail Maly and his wife Natasha had only moved to the United States two years before giving birth to their first and only child. Their original plan was to wait, to build their new life in their new home before starting their family and while the two of them were sure that it would take longer than the two years it did, there was absolute no cause for panic when the doctor told them the news. On the 7th of July, 1988, while traveling on business with her beloved husband, Natasha gave birth to their son, Ethan Joseph Maly. Two days following his birth he was home and settled in, a part of the family. The plan had always been, concerning their growing family, was to have as many children as they could. Being both traditional and religious kept them away from whatever forms of birth control were offered to them as newly instated citizens of the United States. As it turned out (which they found out after several years of trying to have a second child) the likeliness of Mikhail and Natasha having more children was slim, as the first was more of a fluke than anything. It was always just going to be the three of them which in the end only meant more torment for their only son to deal with.
His youth was simple and yet very complicated. Ethan was a hyper child, he had trouble with keeping still, he rarely paid attention in school and though his parents had tried to help him with studying and homework, he still managed to get below average grades throughout elementary school. It made absolutely no sense to anyone, he knew what he was talking about and he could easily vocalize what he was trying to write down but when it came to the silent, timed testing time he had trouble getting anything written down on paper. After several years it was pretty much apparent that there wasn't something entirely right with his ability to focus or behave well in a structured environment. On the other hand, when it came to non-educational activities he was exceptional. He participated in a few sports, was always out running around at the park, he somehow managed to pay attention while attending mass with his parents and when it came down to learning how to play the piano from his mother he was all ears. It made no sense to his parents but eventually they learned to deal with the way their son was, accepting the fact that they were likely to always get reports of both bad grades and bad behavior where school was concerned.
By the time high school rolled around, much to the surprise of both his teachers and his parents Ethan was coming around and seemingly having an easier time dealing with the urge to run around like a chicken with his head cut off. He was scared. He had heard so many stories about high school that he wasn't quite sure where he'd fit in or even what might happen to him were he to stray from any form of the "popular" path. He had definitely watched a few too many teen movies. As it turned out, it wasn't all that difficult. Almost immediately after his first day of the 9th grade, Ethan had made new friends as well as enemies, his place was set for the next 4 years and he had no issues with that. He let his hair go, stopped letting his parents dress him and started to believe in something besides the God that he had been taught to trust in. Several things got in the way of his budding grades, alcohol, drugs, rock music. He was slowly turning into that kid that did what he wanted when he wanted, he went to school when he wanted to and not nearly enough. The fact that by the end of the 12th grade he had accomplished enough in high school to graduate was a miracle.
The choice to leave home in Maine had less to do with his parents and wanting to escape their religious tyranny than he lets on. A few of his friends from high school were moving to Georgia for college, and while he would have preferred to stay put and not have to get a job for a while as he lived off his parents he chose to move to Brunswick with them.
